The Head of Physical and Health Education (PHE) at the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), Ben Sesay, has welcomed the introduction of archery at the school, describing the sport as both exciting and full of potential for young athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sierra Leone Archery Association (SLAA) on Friday, 24 April 2026, introduced the sport of archery to pupils of Freetown Secondary School for Girls, (F.S.G.G) , Brookfield, in Freetown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Introducing the sport, Norman Akabi-Davies, Technical Director of the Sierra Leone Archery Association, gave a practical demonstration on the use of the bow and arrow, while also teaching the pupils basic techniques and safety principles of archery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akabi-Davies said the School Initiative Programme is considered to take archery directly into schools across the country in order to \u201ccatch them young,\u201d stressing that early exposure is key to developing future athletes. He added that the programme has continued to attract both boys and girls schools from different schools within the Freetown municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking after a brief demonstration session, Ben Sesay expressed optimism about the future of the sport at FSSG, particularly among female students. He highlighted the enthusiasm displayed by the girls during the practical session, noting that even within a short period, their interest and willingness to learn were evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sesay noted that although he had previously seen archery showcased at the Olympic Games, this marks the first time the discipline has been introduced within his school environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
