Sierra Leone joins the world on Monday, April 6th, 2026 in commemorating the “International Day of Sports for Development and Peace”, with a national celebration held under the theme “Sports: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers – Promoting Physical Activity for Health.”
This year’s commemoration brought together key institutions including the National Sports Authority (NSA), the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SL), and presidents of various sports associations.
The celebration began with a symbolic gathering at the Upgun Roundabout, where representatives from 14 sports associations assembled before embarking on a vibrant procession through the eastern, central, and western parts of Freetown. The walk concluded at the National Stadium Practice Field, where athletes from the participating associations staged demonstrations showcasing the importance of sports and physical activity.
The ceremony featured goodwill messages from several dignitaries, including NOC/CGA-SLE Secretary General Ahmed Khanou, SLFA Secretary General Mohamed Bawoh (representing SLFA President Babadi Kamara), Sahid Conteh from the Ministry of Education, a representative from WHO, and the NSA’s Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai.
Their statements collectively underscored the significance of the International Day of Sports and the growing national commitment to strengthening physical activity for health and development.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Sports Madam Augusta James-Teima reaffirmed the government’s dedication to building a healthier and more active population, stressing that sports remain a unifying force capable of breaking social barriers and fostering national cohesion.
The day’s climax was a lively exhibition school football match between St. Edwards Junior Secondary School and Government Junior Secondary School, Kingtom. St. Edwards emerged victorious with a 1–0 win, earning a trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up received silver medals—dignitaries, including the Minister of Sports presented awards.
All participating associations were also presented with certificates of merit.
