The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, has presented a comprehensive account of his two years in office, highlighting reforms, infrastructural expansion, and institutional strengthening within Sierra Leone’s sports sector as well as explaining their set vision for 2030.
Speaking at a well-attended press conference at the NSA headquarters on Signal Hill Road in Freetown, Dr. Abdulai expressed appreciation to Julius Maada Bio for the confidence reposed in him since his appointment on April 15, 2024. He noted that his administration was anchored on a seven-pillar agenda, including transparency and accountability, infrastructure development, capacity building, and decentralisation of sports.
According to the NSA Chief, the Authority is working towards a 2030 vision of establishing a robust sports governance system capable of positioning sports as a viable industry while promoting youth development, national cohesion, and public health.
Dr. Abdulai outlined key infrastructural achievements, including the development of artificial turf pitches in Tihun and Kailahun—currently nearing completion—as well as ongoing renovation work at the Bo Stadium. He further disclosed that over 30 artificial turf facilities were secured through international partnerships, with additional personal support towards the Kailahun project.
On administrative reforms, he revealed that the Authority has introduced regular monthly salary payments for national team coaches, replacing the previous irregular system. He added that staff deployment across local councils has enhanced grassroots sports delivery, while internal restructuring, recruitment, and promotions have improved efficiency.
The NSA, he said, has also strengthened its operational capacity with the provision of essential office equipment, including generators, CCTV systems, and fire safety installations.
In the area of capacity building, Dr. Abdulai highlighted overseas training opportunities facilitated in China for NSA staff—the first of its kind since the Authority’s establishment. He also underscored progress in anti-doping efforts, noting that Sierra Leone now has accredited doping control officers and has commenced athlete testing in line with international standards.
The NSA has continued to support local sports development, including the renovation of the Hill Station Tennis Court in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Tennis Association. The Authority also organised the maiden Inter-Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) football gala, aimed at fostering unity and collaboration among public institutions.
